TMQ Quotes Princess Bride

As I mentioned in previous blog entries (here and here), Gregg Easterbrook's weekly column for ESPN during football season, called Tuesday Morning Quarterback (TMQ), is one of my favorite columns.

This week, I have to mention his column again, because he combines an already good column with a great reference to one of my all-time favorite movies, The Princess Bride. This week's column here.

Easterbrook's ESPN "TMQ" Rocks! -- Literally

Just spent a little time reading this week's Tuesday Morning Quarterback, one of my favorite sports columns of all. His column (link here for this week's) is mostly on the NFL action from the previous week, but he also delves into other thought-provoking topics, often science-related. As a sports-fan who also loves science, space, astronomy, etc. and has an MS in Mechanical Engineering (originally started off in college with an Aerospace Engineering degree plan), I think this is a really cool combo of things to write about.

Side note, I don't AGREE with everything TMQ writes (for example, I think he's completely full of crap about his liberal idea of raising gas taxes), but it's still very interesting on a wide variety of topics.

One interesting paragraph is about why NASA isn't spending more money to prevent dangerous Earth strikes from asteroids / meteors. He also links to a very interesting full-length article in The Atlantic here. Maybe some of those movies (e.g. Deep Impact) about asteroid strikes are not so science-fiction after all!

TMQ is back!

That's ESPN's column by Gregg Easterbrook, Tuesday Morning Quarterback, one of my favorite columns on the web. This week, he pounds on coaches for being chicken and not going for 4th downs and punting (or going for FGs) even when they're in situations where it makes the most sense. He also will point out excellent plays by linemen that often escape notice by most folks. This week, for example, he pointed out an excellent block thrown by a Chicago Bears lineman on a 50-yard TD run. Link here for this week's column: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=easterbrook/080909

When he goes off into political topics he tends to be too liberal for my tastes, but it's still thought-provoking. He'll occasionally also throw in really funny and insightful reviews on movies or science fiction topics. See really good point about "Iron Man" in his column this week.
